“Nasarawa Governor Bags SWAN’s Sports Icon Award, Sets New Agenda”

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commended Nasarawa State Governor, Engr Abdullahi Sule, for hosting its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State. The meeting, which took place on December 11, 2024, brought together NEC members from across the country to discuss key issues affecting sports development in Nigeria.

During the meeting, SWAN National President, Isaiah Benjamin, presented Governor Sule with the first-ever Sports Icon Award, in recognition of his contributions to sports development in Nasarawa State. The Governor was praised for his people-oriented policies and programmes, particularly his passion for sports development.

The NEC meeting also commended the federal government for returning the country’s Sports Administration to the National Sports Commission (NSC) and congratulated the new Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Mr. Bukola Olopade, on their appointments.

Other key resolutions from the meeting include urging the NSC to ensure a credible Sports Federations’ Election, triggering long-term measures to prepare for international competitions, and making sports development a top priority for state governments.

SWAN also reviewed the progress made by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and urged the Federation to step up efforts to ensure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

The meeting concluded with a call for unity among SWAN members and a resolve to set up a fact-finding/reconciliation committee to address issues arising from the Ebonyi State chapter election.
