A prominent member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from Sokoto State, Hon. Muhammad Yahaya, has described Action Alliance (AA) 2027 presidential candidate, Alhaji Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, as a leader whose humility, integrity and commitment to service distinguish him in Nigeria's political landscape.
In a statement made available to journalists in Kaduna, Yahaya recalled a private conversation he had with Omoaje on May 9, 2026, during the SDP National Convention in Bauchi State, saying the brief encounter left a lasting impression on him.
According to Yahaya, while political conventions are often remembered for speeches, negotiations and strategic alliances, it was a quiet discussion away from public attention that proved most memorable.
"There were no cameras, no microphones and no crowd. It was just a brief conversation, but within those few minutes I encountered qualities that are becoming increasingly rare in Nigerian politics—humility, sincerity and quiet wisdom," he said.
Yahaya noted that while some politicians command respect because of the offices they occupy, others earn admiration through their character and values, adding that Omoaje belongs to the latter category.
Reflecting on their discussion, he said Omoaje spoke of leadership as a responsibility rather than a privilege, emphasizing justice, competence and service as essential principles of good governance.
"He spoke about leadership as a duty, not a reward. His vision was of a Nigeria where justice and competence are not campaign promises but everyday realities for citizens," Yahaya stated.
He further observed that Omoaje's willingness to listen impressed him just as much as his words.
"There was no arrogance or desire for applause. He listened attentively and treated the conversation with genuine respect. That level of humility says a great deal about a person's character," he added.
Yahaya maintained that true leadership is reflected in everyday interactions, long before elections are won.
"Leadership begins long before an election. It starts with how people treat others when there is nothing to gain," he said.
He argued that Nigeria's greatest challenge is not a lack of capable people but a shortage of leaders whose personal values align with the responsibilities of public office.
"Regardless of political affiliation, we should be able to recognize and appreciate integrity whenever we see it. Public life becomes stronger when we celebrate good character as much as we criticize failure," he noted.
Yahaya expressed optimism that Nigeria can still produce principled leaders capable of inspiring confidence and driving national development.
"My meeting with Alhaji Adekunle Rufai Omoaje reminded me that there are still Nigerians whose commitment to the country is genuine. It strengthened my belief that principled leadership is still possible in Nigeria," he said.
He expressed hope for another opportunity to engage Omoaje, saying he believes there is much more to learn from his leadership philosophy and experience.
