As the world celebrates International Mother Earth Day on 22nd April, the Register General of the African Institute of Waste Management and Environmental Studies (AIWMES), Dr. Ahmed Lateef Tayo has called for the protection of environment defenders worldwide.
He made the call in an interview with the press in commemoration of World Earth Day 2023 in Kaduna.
He said the purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the rapidly-rising levels of pollution, climate change, and other circumstances that contribute to damaging the environment and threaten the survival of the planet.
“The day is marked by various activities such as tree planting, recycling drives, clean-up campaigns, and environmental education programs” Dr. Ahmed explained.
While emphasizing that the objective of Earth Day is to remind individuals and communities of their responsibility to protect the planet and its ecosystems from pollution, climate change, and other environmental threats.
By taking part in Earth Day activities, people can make a positive impact on the environment and contribute towards a more sustainable future.
The Registrar note that, “Earth Day is now a global event each year, and we believe that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world”.
According to him it is s a day of political action and civic participation. “People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees, and clean up their towns and roads. Corporations and governments use it to make pledges and announce sustainability measures”.
“Faith leaders connect Earth Day with protecting God’s greatest creations, humans, biodiversity, and the planet that we all live on”.
We can start by planting trees, recycling, disposing of waste properly, and reducing the use of plastics that have a huge effect on the environment. By these simple actions, we could save many lives”, he stressed.
He said it is high time for every stakeholder to be supporting the environmental activists in the Fight against global earth warming and ecological challenges affecting humans, animals, and other living organisms.
