NAN Faults elRufai, Ameachi Over Criticism Of INEC

The Northern Awareness Network NAN said statements made by former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its role in the registration process of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) is uncalled for.

A statement issued by the Chairman Salihu Suleiman said, "the comments made by these political figures reflect a misunderstanding of the electoral processes and the responsibilities of INEC, as well as a troubling attempt to deflect attention from their own political shortcomings.

"Amaechi's assertion that INEC is deliberately frustrating opposition parties is not only unfounded but also reveals a sense of desperation from those who seem to be struggling to gain traction in the political landscape.

The NAN said it firmly believes that INEC, as an independent electoral body, is committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process by adhering strictly to established procedures. These procedures are not mere bureaucratic hurdles; they are essential measures designed to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in the political arena.

"The allegations made by Amaechi and El-Rufai suggest that INEC should compromise its standards to accommodate the ADA. However, it is crucial to understand that the requirements set forth by INEC, including the submission of a party address and the identification of party officers, are not arbitrary.

"These requirements exist to prevent the emergence of phantom parties that could undermine the democratic process"

NAN urges all political entities to respect these protocols rather than seeking to circumvent them out of frustration.

"It is particularly worrisome that El-Rufai has publicly expressed doubt regarding INEC's willingness to approve the registration of the opposition coalition’s new party. Such statements not only cast a shadow over the integrity of INEC but also reflect a broader narrative of distrust that can be detrimental to our democratic institutions.

The NAN calls for constructive dialogue and collaboration among all political stakeholders rather than fostering division and suspicion.

It is essential for opposition parties, including the ADA, to engage in self-reflection and recognize that their current struggles may stem from a lack of resonance with the electorate rather than systemic obstruction by INEC.

The NAN believes that the key to political success lies in the ability to connect with the people and address their needs, rather than relying solely on coalition formations that may not be well-received".

The NAN said it stands firmly behind the principles of democratic governance and the role of INEC as a neutral arbiter in the electoral process. We urge Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and other political leaders to focus on building a robust political platform that genuinely reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
