Arewa Group Reaffirms Solidarity with Matawalle, Condemns Politically Motivated Calls for His Removal

The Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace (AJIP) has declared its unwavering support for the Minister of Defence, Bello Matawalle, dismissing recent calls for his removal as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement signed by its Director General, Musa Danbaki, the group characterized the campaign against the Minister as a misguided and desperate ploy, allegedly orchestrated and funded by Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal. AJIP asserted that such actions undermine both the integrity of national leadership and the fragile unity of Northern Nigeria.

The statement read in part: “It is imperative to recognize that Governor Lawal’s recent political maneuvers are rooted in desperation. As a leader who has repeatedly aligned himself with bandit leaders, his efforts to discredit Minister Matawalle stem from a fear of exposure.”

“Matawalle has been a stalwart advocate for peace and security, working tirelessly to dismantle the violent networks plaguing our communities. His commitment to transparency threatens the foundations of Lawal’s questionable alliances, compelling the Governor to resort to distraction through baseless allegations against a dedicated public servant.”

AJIP further contended that the attacks on the Minister extend beyond personal grievance, forming part of a broader strategy to destabilize support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections. By targeting Matawalle, a key pillar of Northern support for the President, detractors aim to weaken efforts to foster regional stability and growth.

The group praised Matawalle’s performance, noting his dedication has led to significant improvements in Nigeria’s security landscape. Under his stewardship, there have been concerted efforts to engage communities, empower local leaders, and address the socio-economic drivers of unrest—a comprehensive approach that has earned him widespread respect.

“As we reflect on the current political climate, we reaffirm our solidarity with President Tinubu and his vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement continued. “A cohesive leadership is essential to navigating our challenges. The path to peace is difficult, but unity and collaboration are our only means to overcome.”

AJIP called on all stakeholders to reject divisive rhetoric and instead focus on fostering dialogue and supporting leaders committed to the public good.

“The strength of our region lies in uniting against common threats. We must not allow personal vendettas to distract us from the greater good,” the statement emphasized.

The group concluded by urging the citizens of Zamfara State and the wider North to rally behind Minister Matawalle and President Tinubu: “We stand firm in our commitment to peace, security, and unity. Let us remain vigilant against misinformation and support leaders who prioritize our communities’ welfare over personal ambition. Together, we can forge a more secure and prosperous future for all Nigerians.”
