The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association Worldwide has commended the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his administrative support and infrastructure interventions at the institution, while announcing a new ₦20 million financial aid package for underprivileged students.
Speaking during an alumni gathering in Kaduna, the National Treasurer of the association, Dr. Haruna Mohammed Juma'are (Marafan Zazzau), stated that the gesture was part of a broader nationwide initiative involving 37 branches and the national body.
Recognizing State Support
Dr. Juma'are highlighted Governor Uba Sani’s key contributions to ABU Zaria, particularly the construction of eight kilometers of road infrastructure within the main campus. He noted that such significant intervention from a state government toward the federal institution was unprecedented since its establishment in 1962.
"One hand cannot lift a heavy load alone," Dr. Juma'are remarked. "We deemed it necessary to honor the Governor and his team, including the Deputy Governor and the Secretary to the State Government, for their ongoing commitment to our alma mater."
The event was attended by members of the national executive committee, delegation led by the association's President, the Kaduna State Branch Chairman, Engr. Abubakar Gambo Umar, alongside the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Alumni Relations.
Empowering Indigent Students
Addressing the growing economic challenges facing students, Dr. Juma'are announced a scholarship scheme designed to assist high-performing students from low-income backgrounds.
* Target Beneficiaries: 200 undergraduate students.
* Grant Value: ₦100,000 per recipient.
* Selection Criteria: Merit, verified financial need, and academic standing.
Dr. Juma'are concluded with a charge to public office holders and societal leaders to prioritize public welfare amidst current economic pressures, unemployment, and inflation.
"We urge leaders at all levels to act with justice and compassion for the less privileged. Effective leadership relies on fairness, empathy, and supporting the next generation so they can, in turn, contribute positively to society," he said.
