A coalition of Nigerian climate and environmental activists has launched the #Vote4Climate Initiative, urging political parties and aspirants to include climate change and environmental protection in their manifestos ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement made available to journalists, the coalition said the campaign is designed to push climate change and environmental issues into political discussions and campaigns across Nigeria's 36 states.
Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, Head of Communications and Strategies at African Climate Reporters, said climate change should no longer be treated as a secondary issue during election campaigns, given that its effects are already being felt by millions of Nigerians.
He said flooding, drought, desertification, deforestation, extreme heat, pollution and water shortages are increasingly threatening agriculture, food security, livelihoods and public health nationwide.
Yakubu called on political aspirants to present clear, practical plans for tackling climate change, citing tree planting, forest restoration, clean energy, sustainable agriculture, improved waste management, flood prevention and the protection of water resources as priority areas.
He also urged voters, particularly young Nigerians, to back candidates who show genuine commitment to environmental protection and climate action.
The coalition said elevating climate change as a major issue in the 2027 elections would push future leaders toward long-term solutions to Nigeria's environmental challenges and better protect vulnerable communities.
The #Vote4Climate Initiative is backed by a range of climate advocates, civil society organisations and environmental groups, including Metro-environmental Initiative and Green Connection, which aim to mobilise Nigerians to demand stronger climate commitments from political candidates.
