ACI Urges Northern Voters to Prioritise Welfare and Development in 2027 Elections

The Arewa Cohesion Initiative (ACI) has called on voters in Northern Nigeria to support candidates with a demonstrated commitment and capacity to address the region's socio-economic challenges in the forthcoming elections.

The Director-General of ACI, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, made the call during a live appearance on Liberty Radio's Breakfast Show in Kaduna, where he questioned why the North, despite having the largest voting population in the country, continues to grapple with widespread poverty and insecurity.

He urged voters to prioritise their welfare by considering candidates with practical solutions to persistent challenges, including insecurity, youth unemployment, educational backwardness, the Almajiri phenomenon and poverty.

Dr. Idris cited the constitutional provision that identifies the security and welfare of citizens as the primary responsibility of government, expressing concern that many elected officials from the region had not adequately addressed these fundamental responsibilities.

He stressed the need for voters to make their choices based on issues that directly affect their lives and the future of their communities.

The ACI Director-General also advocated good governance, regional unity and cohesion, describing them as essential to addressing the North's development challenges.

He further highlighted drug abuse, poor governance and the Almajiri system among issues requiring urgent attention, calling on political and community leaders to strengthen collective efforts towards finding lasting solutions.
