The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has applauded the election of the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, as the new President of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B.

In a press release signed by SWAN Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, and dated May 20, 2025, the association described Gusau’s elevation as a fitting recognition of his enduring commitment to football development in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

“Your installation as WAFU B President is a clear testament to your years of dogged passion and dedication to the growth of football in Nigeria, West Africa and beyond,” the statement read in part.

SWAN expressed confidence in Gusau’s leadership capacity, noting that his dedication to football administration makes him deserving of even higher positions in sports governance, both within and outside Africa.

“As Sports Writers in Nigeria, we are mostly confident that you deserve even more elevated positions in the administration of football and general sporting management,” the association noted.

The statement further emphasized SWAN’s commitment to partnering with Gusau and the NFF in promoting football-driven development, pledging continued support for initiatives geared toward advancing the sport.

Led by its National President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, SWAN reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with Gusau’s administration, expressing optimism that his leadership at the regional level will bring about positive transformation in West African football.

Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau’s emergence as WAFU B President adds another feather to Nigeria’s cap in continental football leadership, and signals a new era of influence and responsibility for the country in regional sports administration.
