The Senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, Sen. Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, has advocated for a more united forum of Islamic Scholars from the Northern region. He suggested that speaking with one voice is one of the best options for achieving effective results in finding a way out of the severe security and socio-economic challenges affecting the region.
Sen. Abdulaziz Yari, who is also a former Governor of Zamfara State, made the call during the Northern Islamic Scholars summit jointly organized by various Islamic organizations in Kaduna.
Sen. Yari highly commended the idea of organizing the conference at this critical time. He stressed the urgent need for a united front of clerics and other relevant stakeholders from the North to develop workable suggestions for the government on how to stem the tide of bandit attacks and kidnappings.
He noted that such cooperation would greatly benefit the progress of the affected communities, who are predominantly Muslim adherents.
He also stated that the National Assembly would welcome submissions from the Islamic clerics regarding the posture the Federal Government should adopt concerning complaints arising from the improper use of social media platforms. These complaints include targeted smear campaigns, the spread of fake news and hate speech, and indecent content that negatively affects the younger generation.
In an interview with newsmen during the summit, the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Sen. Shehu Umar Buba, described the northern Islamic cleric conference as a welcome development.
He gave his opinion that the non-kinetic approach which is showing positive results in states like Kaduna through engaging in peace pacts with bandits—should be replicated in other affected states. He noted that recent research globally suggests such non-military approaches achieve better results in containing similar security challenges.
