Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has held a telephone conversation with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, to discuss the latest developments following what Iran described as attacks and aggression by the United States and Israel.
During the call, Araghchi outlined what he described as the dimensions of the attacks, accusing the United States and Israel of targeting civilian locations including schools, hospitals, residential areas, and historical monuments. According to the Iranian foreign minister, such actions constitute a clear violation of international law and the fundamental principles of humanitarian law.
He also highlighted the human and material damage resulting from the strikes and called on the international community and relevant institutions to decisively condemn the actions.
Araghchi stressed that Iran reserves the inherent right to defend itself against what he termed an imposed war. He said Iran had earlier warned regional and international parties that any United States military action against the country would prompt Iran to target American facilities and bases across the region, potentially expanding the conflict.
The Iranian foreign minister maintained that any response from Iran would be carried out within the framework of the country’s right to self-defence under international law, adding that protecting the security and lives of Iranian citizens remains a fundamental responsibility of the government.
He further urged the United Nations to take stronger and more responsible positions in condemning what he described as aggression and crimes committed against Iran. Araghchi warned that silence or weak reactions from the international community could encourage further instability and escalate tensions in the region.
Responding, the UN Secretary-General emphasized the need for all parties to respect international law and avoid actions that could further escalate the situation. Guterres also acknowledged Iran’s right to defend itself and stressed the importance of efforts to prevent the spread of conflict and to reduce its humanitarian and security consequences in the region.
