Arsenal Football Club supporters in the Makarfi Local Government Area gathered on Sunday at the old residence of the late former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, to host a celebratory networking event aimed at strengthening regional unity.
The gathering, organized by a local planning committee, brought together football enthusiasts to celebrate the club’s recent successes and foster community relationships across different fanbases.
Abubakar Dogara Fagachi, the Secretary of the Planning Committee, stated that the event was designed to openly express the joy of local fans and deepen social ties within the community.
"We organized this gathering to express our happiness as Arsenal fans within the Makarfi Local Government Area," Fagachi said. "This event has truly strengthened our bonds of friendship. We extended invitations to many, and we thank God that people responded in large numbers, contributing meaningfully to the success of the day."
Responding to critics who questioned the timing of the celebration, Fagachi dismissed the skepticism, stating that positive community actions do not have an expiration date.
He explained that the Makarfi event was the local grassroots phase of a structured series of celebrations that previously saw national, state, and zonal assemblies held in Kano, Kaduna, and Zaria, respectively.
In addition to the Arsenal faithful, the event drew a diverse crowd that included representatives from rival fan clubs, as well as supporters of teams from the Spanish league.
Organizers highlighted this cross-club attendance as a key achievement in promoting local peace and solidarity.
"The underlying purpose of this gathering was to build bridges and strengthen relationships," Fagachi noted. "We invited rival fan clubs to join us, and they honored our invitation. We even had supporters of Spanish football clubs here, proving that football transcends team rivalry."
Speaking on the grand success of the event, the Chairman of the organizing committee, Abdullahi Thousands, emphasized the broader social impact of the gathering, noting that football remains an unmatched tool for community integration.
"This celebration is a testament to the fact that football is far more than just a game; it is a powerful instrument for peace, unity, and social cohesion," Abdullahi said.
"Seeing Arsenal fans stand shoulder-to-shoulder with supporters of rival clubs, including those from the Spanish league, reflects the true spirit of sportsmanship that we stand for. In Makarfi, we have demonstrated that while our football allegiances may differ, our commitment to mutual respect and community solidarity remains unshakable."
Abdullahi also noted that bringing the celebration to the grassroots level allowed the committee to directly engage with passionate local fans who form the bedrock of the sports community.
He expressed his gratitude to all attendees and contributors who made the event possible.
Organizers urged other local football fan associations to emulate the initiative by organizing similar community-binding events to foster sportsmanship and camaraderie across the area.
