The Kaduna State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rt. Hon. Isa Mohammed Ashiru, has condemned an attack involving members and supporters of the party in Kaduna.
In a statement signed by his Media/Spokesman, Abdulwaheed Olayinka Adubi, Ashiru expressed concern over the incident involving ADC supporters who had gathered to welcome him following his return from a two-week Lesser Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
He described the incident as unacceptable, saying attacks on political supporters could undermine democratic participation and the right of citizens to freely associate with and support the political party or candidate of their choice.
The statement said several ADC members were attacked during the incident, while some vehicles were also vandalised.
It further stated that the persons involved in the attack were conveyed in a branded Renewed Hope eighteen-seater bus and a Hilux vehicle and were armed with dangerous weapons.
Ashiru said the group caused disturbances before being sighted entering the Kaduna State Secretariat of the Renewed Hope at about 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday.
He called on the Kaduna State Government and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to ensure that political differences do not escalate into violence, intimidation or restrictions on opposition activities.
Ashiru also urged Governor Uba Sani to ensure that all political parties and their supporters are allowed to conduct legitimate activities peacefully and without fear.
The ADC candidate called on security agencies to investigate the incident and the reported destruction of property, and to bring anyone found responsible to justice, regardless of political affiliation.
He appealed to ADC members and supporters to remain peaceful, law-abiding and disciplined, assuring them that the party would continue to pursue its political objectives through lawful and constitutional means.
Ashiru said the ADC would not be drawn into violence, stressing that its response would remain centred on the ballot, issues and the electorate.
He also urged political actors in Kaduna State to prioritise peace, security and stability, saying violence and intimidation have no place in the democratic process.
