Gombe State to Grant One-Week Break for 2026 Inter-Secondary School Games

Gombe – The Gombe State Government has pledged to grant a one-week break for schools to participate in the 2026 edition of the Inter-secondary Schools Athletics and Principals' Cup Football Competition.

This assurance was given by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aisha Umar Maigari, during an interaction with sports journalists on the sidelines of the ongoing Gombe State Inter-secondary Schools Athletics Championship.

Dr. Maigari emphasized that this approval would be contingent on the competition's schedule not conflicting with the academic calendar.

"The State Government is in support of the Gombe State Inter-secondary Schools Athletics Championship and the Principals' Cup Football Competition, and that is why His Excellency has approved a one-week break for schools to participate in the competitions, and this is in tandem with the Federal Government policy," Dr. Maigari stated.

She further explained, "We are ready to approve a week break for next year's edition if it doesn't clash with our schools calendar. We will do it in a way that it doesn't affect the school calendar, and we are able to deliver our curriculum for our students to study and prepare for their exams."

Dr. Maigari highlighted the government's commitment to supporting grassroots sports development by providing a conducive environment for the games, including designating one of the state's schools as a camp for the participating teams.

"Our support is that we have provided one of our schools as a camp for the teams, and I think that is the greatest support. It is one of His Excellency's legacies to ensure it benefits children of Gombe State. We have also asked our teachers to support and ensure the success of the games," she added.

This initiative by the Gombe State Government demonstrates a strong commitment to fostering sporting talent among the youth and ensuring their holistic development.
